Lightweight Conformal Antennas

Under DARPA funding, Applied Radar has developed novel patent-pending lightweight antenna technology. Our conductive fiber and woven sheet antennas incorporate low-cost, lightweight flexible substrates. These antennas have numerous applications, some of which arelisted below. Please see our article in Textile World.

Applications:

  • Wearable antennas
  • Conformal aircraft or vehicle antennas
  • Hidden antennas that conform to the environment
  • Very large phased-array apertures

Advantages:

  • Extremely low cost
  • Very light weight
  • Flexible substrates

Performance Comparison

Shown below is a measured radiation pattern performance comparison of a 2x2 quad patch antenna fabricated using our novel conductive fiber antennas against a reference PTFE design. The novel antenna has slightly higher gain, due to our low-loss substrate. The specifications and advantages are summarized in the antenna below.
